In September 2024, the Town of Pembroke took a major step forward in its commitment to health and wellness by unveiling its brand-new outdoor Fitness Court.

Located at 128 Center Street behind the new Community Center, this exciting addition provides residents with a state-of-the-art space for free, high-quality workouts. Pembroke has long been dedicated to fostering community engagement and promoting active lifestyles. Through its Recreation Department, the town offers a diverse range of recreational opportunities for residents of all ages and abilities. The addition of the Fitness Court enhances these offerings by providing an inclusive, accessible space where individuals can engage in full-body workouts using seven exercise stations.

The launch event on September 25 brought the community together for a celebration of movement and wellness. Attendees witnessed an inspiring ribbon-cutting ceremony followed by a friendly fitness competition featuring Pembroke's dedicated local leaders. Special guest Addy Herman, an American Ninja Warrior champion and Massachusetts native, joined the festivities, demonstrating the versatility and effectiveness of the Fitness Court’s training system.

Herman has competed in seasons 13 through 16 of American Ninja Warrior, the popular competition series that brings elite athletes together from across the country. In its 16th season, which aired in May 2023, she made history as the women’s champion—a dream she had been chasing since she first started watching the show at age nine. "I always get nervous before competing, but I’ve learned to use it to my advantage. I remind myself that I’m nervous because I care. Then, once the countdown starts—three, two, one—my mind quiets, and my body takes over," she shared.

With a background in gymnastics and obstacle course training, Herman has become one of the top female competitors in the sport, inspiring countless individuals to embrace fitness and push their limits. At the Pembroke launch event, she led a community workout, showing attendees how the Fitness Court can be used by individuals of all fitness levels.

We are excited to join the National Fitness Campaign family and to partner with Blue Cross to provide this unique fitness experience, said Lance Kennedy, Community Services Director for the Town of Pembroke. Each visit can provide its own individual experience, with the ability to achieve a full-body workout in just seven minutes. The Fitness Court will improve the quality of life for Pembroke residents and help create an outdoor wellness community. It is designed for all users at any fitness level. Pembroke is the first community on the South Shore to build a Fitness Court, with other locations throughout the state.

Pembroke’s Fitness Court is one of 15 Blue Cross-sponsored Fitness Courts that have been built or are set to open in Massachusetts this year. The installation aligns with the town’s ongoing efforts to enhance public spaces and provide equitable access to fitness opportunities for all residents.

Blue Cross is committed to helping people across the state lead healthy lives and eliminating the physical and social barriers that contribute to health disparities, said Jeff Bellows, vice president of corporate citizenship and public affairs at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts. We’re proud to partner with NFC and the Town of Pembroke to launch a Fitness Court that will provide the community with a new, outdoor gathering space and access to premier, free fitness and wellness opportunities.”

The new Fitness Court allows residents to exercise at their own pace while enjoying the fresh air and scenic surroundings. Whether individuals are new to fitness or experienced athletes, the space is designed to accommodate all ability levels. Those looking for guidance can access a full workout library through the Fitness Court app, making it easy to start their fitness journey.

Reflecting on the event, Jeff Bellows, vice president of corporate citizenship and public affairs at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts, shared on LinkedIn, 'We’re so excited to officially open our 12th Fitness Court last week in partnership with the Town of Pembroke and special guest American Ninja Warrior Champion Addy Herman! We're proud to partner with National Fitness Campaign to build Fitness Courts across Massachusetts, providing communal gathering spaces and equitable access to premier, free, outdoor fitness opportunities for all community members.'
