In Malden, MA, Coach Julio Salado has turned the city’s Fitness Court into a vibrant hub for connection, movement, and community pride. An award-winning fitness professional, author, and founder of Fitness Foundry, Julio has built a career on creating accessible, inclusive programs, and the Fitness Court has become a natural extension of that mission.

Born and raised in Boston, Julio found his earliest inspiration from a soccer coach who knew exactly how to motivate his players. That experience shaped the type of coach and leader he aspired to be, one who uplifts, encourages, and makes fitness fun. Over the past two decades, Julio has guided countless individuals to achieve their fitness goals, blending western exercise science with eastern arts in his unique methodology. His credentials include:

Julio’s philosophy, A.I.M.—Assess, Initiate, Motivate—aims to build self-efficacy so that every participant feels empowered to live their healthiest life.

From Launch Day to Ongoing Activation

Julio first stepped onto the Fitness Court during Malden’s official ribbon-cutting in 2023, leading functional movement demonstrations for residents and students. Right away, he saw the potential for ongoing activation.

Within weeks, he launched Nature’s Gym: Walk and Fitness, a free monthly program pairing bodyweight exercise sessions on the Fitness Court with a two-mile power walk through the surrounding neighborhood. Designed for all ages and fitness levels, the group has grown steadily, attracting seniors, families, and beginners who might otherwise hesitate to join a traditional gym.

As a Licensed EMT-B and health equity advocate, Julio uses both in-person events and social media to highlight the preventative care benefits of regular movement—from improving bone density to managing blood pressure and supporting mental health. His “how-to” and “why-do” exercise videos also remind the community that the Fitness Court is free, accessible, and even wheelchair-friendly. Julio notes that it doesn’t matter if you have five followers or ten thousand—what matters is using social media for good and keeping the community engaged.

“Everyone can get moving,” Julio says. “It’s about creating a supportive environment where people feel welcome to start at their own pace.”

Meeting the Community Where They Are

Julio’s success isn’t just about running great workouts, it’s about building relationships. In addition to his work on the Fitness Court, Julio teaches weekly senior fitness classes at the Malden Senior Center and leads 8-week programs through the City’s Department of Recreation. By staying connected with local agencies and leaders, he identifies gaps in existing programs and uses the Fitness Court to fill them, especially for groups who have fewer options for free, outdoor exercise.
