Groveland is making strides in community wellness with the grand opening of Cherry Lake Park and its new Fitness Court. The launch event featured a ribbon-cutting, fitness demos, and a fun-filled Trunk or Treat celebration.

The City of Groveland has taken another step toward enhancing its community spaces and promoting healthy lifestyles with the grand opening of Cherry Lake Park. As part of this revitalization, the city unveiled a brand-new Fitness Court®, offering residents a free, world-class outdoor workout experience. The launch event, held on October 31, 2024, was a festive community gathering featuring a ribbon-cutting ceremony, interactive fitness demonstrations, and a lively “Trunk or Treat” celebration that brought residents together in the spirit of health and community engagement.

A Commitment to Connectivity and Wellness

Groveland, once a quiet rural town, has transformed into one of Florida’s fastest-growing communities, thanks to strategic growth initiatives and a focus on preserving its “natural charm.” The city’s leadership has placed a strong emphasis on connectivity—linking residents with nature, recreational spaces, and one another. Cherry Lake Park’s improvements, including the addition of the Fitness Court®, exemplify Groveland’s vision of building complete, walkable communities that prioritize wellness and accessibility.

Groveland residents on the Fitness Court

We are thrilled to open Cherry Lake Park, a space that will serve as a hub for outdoor activities and community gatherings, said Groveland Mayor Evelyn Wilson. With this park, we are continuing our commitment to providing residents with exceptional recreational opportunities while embracing Groveland’s natural charm and beauty. This project stays in line with our city’s strategic plan to foster a vibrant and connected community that is accessible for all to enjoy.

Located within the Cherry Lake Park expansion, the Fitness Court® is a state-of-the-art outdoor bodyweight training system designed for users of all fitness levels. Featuring seven core exercise zones—squat, push, pull, lunge, core, agility, and bend—the court provides a well-rounded workout in just seven minutes. Additionally, fitness enthusiasts can download the free Fitness Court app, which offers instructional videos, guided workouts, and customizable fitness plans.

A Community-Driven Initiative

The Fitness Court was made possible through a collaboration between the City of Groveland and its partners, including the Live Well Foundation of South Lake, whose support played a pivotal role in bringing the project to life.

We want to express our gratitude to the Live Well Foundation for their significant contributions to making this fitness option a reality with their partnership, said Parks and Community Services Director Mike Walker. Cherry Lake Park is the result of collaborative efforts between the city and our partners, and we’re excited to have everyone enjoy it.

This investment in public fitness aligns with Groveland’s larger Parks, Recreation, Trails, and Open Space Master Plan, which aims to create a network of greenways and trails connecting residents to parks, schools, and other essential destinations. The city has been intentional in its development, ensuring that outdoor spaces are not only preserved but enhanced to foster a sense of place and well-being for residents and visitors alike.

A Grand Opening to Remember

The launch of Cherry Lake Park and its Fitness Court® coincided with a family-friendly Halloween celebration that drew a large crowd. Following the official ribbon-cutting, families participated in the “Trunk or Treat” event, where children dressed in costumes and collected candy from festively decorated vehicles. The first 250 children received Halloween tote bags, adding to the excitement of the day. Meanwhile, fitness instructors showcased workout demonstrations, encouraging residents to engage with the new Fitness Court® and explore its many benefits.

The vibrant gathering highlighted Groveland’s dedication to fostering an engaged and active community. By integrating fitness with community-building events, the city is making wellness an integral part of everyday life.

Looking Ahead: A City Focused on Smart Growth

Groveland’s expansion and commitment to smart growth have positioned it as a model for other cities aiming to balance development with environmental stewardship and public well-being. With its population expected to more than double by 2040, the city continues to prioritize projects that promote sustainability, recreation, and accessibility.

Cherry Lake Park’s improvements, including its interwoven trail system and multipurpose recreational spaces, highlight Groveland’s focus on providing diverse fitness and leisure options. The city’s long-term vision includes expanding greenways and trails to ensure that every resident lives within walking distance of recreational amenities.

The addition of the Fitness Court® to Cherry Lake Park is just one of many initiatives reflecting Groveland’s dedication to an interconnected, health-focused future. By investing in spaces that encourage movement, connection, and outdoor enjoyment, the city is paving the way for a healthier and more vibrant community.

As Groveland continues to grow, projects like Cherry Lake Park serve as a testament to the city’s commitment to enhancing quality of life while preserving the natural beauty that makes it unique. With initiatives like this, Groveland isn’t just expanding—it’s thriving, fostering a community where wellness and connectivity go hand in hand.
