From Mind and Body demos to a Strength session, UH's grand opening set the tone for a more active campus life.
On a sunny Tuesday in April, the University of Houston did something that had been three years in the making. Students, faculty, staff, and campus leaders gathered for the grand opening of UH's first Fitness Court, a free, outdoor fitness destination built through a partnership with Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas and the National Fitness Campaign, and designed for every member of the Cougar community.

The UH Marching Band set the tone from the moment guests arrived, filling the air with the kind of energy that signals something worth showing up for. UH mascots and Wellbeing mascots moved through the crowd for photos and mingling, while students, faculty, and staff gathered around light refreshments and took in the new space for the first time. It was the kind of morning that reminded everyone on campus why community matters.
A Vision That Started With a Conversation
The idea for the Fitness Court at UH didn't happen overnight. Don Yackley, Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs and Student Housing and Residential Life, recalled how the project first came to life.
"Three years ago, Campus Recreation approached us with the idea," Yackley said. "We wanted some place high-traffic and accessible for all students, and here we are today."
The location, nestled between the A.D. Bruce Religion Center and The Quad, was chosen deliberately. High foot traffic, open air, and a central position on campus made it the right fit for a facility meant to serve the broadest possible cross-section of the UH community. The Fitness Court features seven exercise stations, is free to use daily, and is supported by optional online coaching through a mobile app.

For Yackley, the Fitness Court represents something that goes well beyond physical fitness.
"The Fitness Court will offer members of the UH community a new amenity that supports both individual and self-directed well-being, as well as opportunities to engage with others on their fitness journey," said Don Yackley. "It's about opportunities for students to connect with each other and faculty and staff to connect," Yackley said. "It's a place for engagement and connection, and that's all a part of wellbeing."
The Celebration That Launched It
The opening ceremony brought together a remarkable cross-section of campus leadership. Dr. Paul Kittle, Vice Chancellor and Vice President for Student Affairs at the University of Houston, welcomed the crowd and set the stage for what the Fitness Court means for the campus community. Partnership appreciation was extended to the departments that helped bring the project to life, including Student Housing and Residential Life, Human Resources, Campus Recreation, Student Affairs, and UH Facilities, alongside National Fitness Campaign and Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas.
Representatives from both NFC and BCBSTX took the stage to speak to the partnership that made the installation possible, before one of the day's most memorable moments: the ribbon cutting, led by the UH mascots themselves.
Krista Docwra represented BCBSTX at the ceremony, and her presence underscored the statewide commitment behind the BCBSTX campaign that continues to bring Fitness Courts to Texas college campuses. The Daily Cougar was on hand to cover the event, capturing the moment for the wider UH community.
Students and Staff Speak to the Impact
The crowd that gathered for the grand opening wasn't short on enthusiasm, and the students who experienced the Fitness Court for the first time wasted no time sharing what it meant to them.
"I feel like it gives students a different type of workout than what they normally get," said mechanical engineering freshman Germany Reed Jr.
Environmental science senior Fernando Sarmiento-Cala appreciated what the outdoor setting adds to the campus fitness experience.
"This Fitness Court offers more functional fitness that we don't really have at the Rec Center," Sarmiento-Cala said. "It's also outdoors."
Courtney Stein, HR Wellness Administrator, captured the spirit of the day simply and directly.
"We hope that people take advantage of having the Fitness Court right at their disposal," said Stein. "And that they come out here and have a good time."
A Full Day of Movement
The grand opening wasn't just a ceremony. It was a full morning of programming designed to show the UH community exactly what the Fitness Court can do. After the ribbon cutting, Rec staff moved into demonstration mode, teaching guests how to use the equipment while themed sessions took over the yoga side of the Fitness Court. A Mind and Body session kicked things off, followed by a Strength-themed demonstration, and closing out with a Dance session that kept the energy high through the afternoon. Every session was designed to show that the Fitness Court isn't a one-note facility. It's a space for every kind of mover.

And the story doesn't end with opening day. UH is already planning a Fall Kick-Off event for the Fitness Court, signaling that this launch is the beginning of a sustained activation effort to keep the campus community engaged and coming back.
A New Chapter for Campus Wellness
The University of Houston's Fitness Court is a meaningful addition to NFC's growing education campaign in Texas, a program bringing free outdoor fitness infrastructure to college campuses and making wellness a permanent part of student life. For a campus as large and dynamic as UH, a free, always-open, outdoor Fitness Court at the heart of campus is exactly the kind of investment that pays dividends for years to come.
"We wanted some place high-traffic and accessible for all students," Yackley said, "and here we are today."
Here they are indeed, and the Cougars are just getting started.
The University of Houston didn't just open a Fitness Court. They built a new gathering place for the entire campus community. With mascots cutting the ribbon, the Marching Band playing, and students already putting the equipment to work, UH set the bar for what a higher education Fitness Court launch can look like.
Is your campus ready to be next? Universities and colleges across the country are joining National Fitness Campaign, and the momentum on campuses like UH proves the demand is there. Reach out to NFC today and find out how to bring a Fitness Court to your campus.
