Mayor Villalobos leads by example in a milestone launch that had cadets, cheerleaders, and confetti.

There are birthday parties, and then there is what happened at Bill Schupp Park on the morning of Wednesday, May 6, 2026. Mayor Javier Villalobos didn't mark his 60th birthday with cake and candles -- he dropped down and did 60 pushups in front of his city, challenged everyone around him to do the same, and then celebrated with a ribbon cutting, a crowd of energized community members, and a shower of confetti raining down over McAllen's newest Fitness Court.

It was one of the most memorable launches of the statewide Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas campaign and a fitting reflection of the community spirit that defines McAllen, Texas.

A Community Commitment, One Rep at a Time

The event, formally billed as the Sweet 60 Showdown, was about far more than birthday fanfare. Mayor Villalobos had made a deliberate decision at the start of the year to channel his milestone birthday into something meaningful for his city. The launch of the Fitness Court at Bill Schupp Park was the culmination of that commitment.

"At the start of this year, as I prepared to turn 60, I committed to doing something meaningful to inspire our community to move and prioritize their physical and emotional health. This is about leading by example and showing that McAllen is not defined by outside perceptions, but by people committed to living stronger, healthier lives," said Mayor Javier Villalobos.

When the moment came, the mayor didn't do it alone. McAllen Police Academy cadets dropped down alongside him, rep for rep, 60 pushups in honor of 60 years. The cheerleaders of Alonzo De Leon Middle School joined the mayor on the Fitness Court as well, bringing their signature energy to every rep. It was an image that captured everything the Fitness Court is about: leaders and community moving together. After the last pushup and the ribbon was cut, confetti burst into the air and the crowd erupted.

The Scene at Bill Schupp Park

Irma Chapa, McAllen's Director of Communications, served as MC for the event, guiding a high energy morning that brought together City Commission members, City Manager Isaac J. Tawil and city leadership, representatives from Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas, and a crowd of McAllen residents ready to celebrate. The energy was amplified by the cheerleaders of Alonzo De Leon Middle School, home of the Mighty Lions,  who brought their signature enthusiasm to the ceremony before joining the mayor on the Fitness Court for the Sweet 60 Showdown.

Ben Suarez, Senior Manager of Large Group Account Management at BCBSTX, was also on hand, representing the statewide partnership that has helped bring Fitness Courts to communities across Texas.

Local fitness ambassadors demonstrated the equipment and were available to help residents make the most of their new outdoor fitness resource from day one. The moment drew media attention from across the region, with local news stations on the ground to capture the celebration. The Fitness Court at Bill Schupp Park --a beloved McAllen staple --now stands as a free, high-quality fitness destination available to every resident, every day.

A Win for McAllen's Quality of Life

For City Manager Isaac J. Tawil, the launch represented exactly the kind of investment McAllen continues to make in its people.

"This is another meaningful investment in our families and in the overall quality of life we're building here in McAllen," said City Manager Isaac J. Tawil. "Bill Schupp Park has long been a staple in our community, and it only made sense to elevate it with amenities that reflect the kind of active, connected, and vibrant lifestyle our residents deserve. This is what winning looks like for our city -- accessible, high-quality spaces that support healthier lives for everyone."

The mayor echoed that vision on the ground, making the case for what fitness infrastructure can do for a community's sense of itself.

"We're just trying to get the community get engaged at the very end," said Mayor Villalobos. "Exercise will help you with weight loss; stronger heart, stronger lungs. If you do that, there's a better chance that you're going to be better off."

A Milestone for the Rio Grande Valley and the State of Texas

This launch marked a significant milestone for the BCBSTX statewide campaign: the 53rd Fitness Court launched through the partnership and the 66th Fitness Court now open across Texas. For the Rio Grande Valley specifically, McAllen's Bill Schupp Park installation is the 9th Fitness Court to open in the region: a testament to the Valley's growing commitment to free, accessible outdoor fitness for all.

McAllen joins a wave of Rio Grande Valley communities investing in their residents' health, including the City of Alamo, which recently opened its second Fitness Court at the Alaniz-Villagomez All-Inclusive Park. Together, these communities are demonstrating that the Valley is serious about health equity, accessible infrastructure, and building places where residents of every age and background can show up, move, and thrive.

When a mayor celebrates his 60th birthday by leading his city through 60 pushups -- with police cadets and cheerleaders beside him, cameras rolling, and confetti falling over a brand-new Fitness Court -- that is the kind of launch that gets people talking. And it should.

McAllen showed what's possible when city leadership goes all in. From the Sweet 60 Showdown to the confetti-filled ribbon cutting, this launch proved that a Fitness Court isn't just infrastructure--it's a rallying point for a community committed to living better together. And with 66 Fitness Courts now open across Texas, the movement is only gaining speed.
