From Chelmsford to Lee, a growing network of cities and towns is embracing the power of outdoor wellness. These free, open-air gyms are helping residents get stronger, together—physically and socially—while reclaiming public spaces in ways that promote lifelong health.
“The Town of Chelmsford is pleased to provide an outdoor Fitness Court program to the community, particularly in a time when health and wellness have become a higher priority… The Fitness Court is adaptable for all ages and easy to use through the app or on-site guides,” — Lisa Marrone, Director of Business Development, Town of Chelmsford
Launched in October 2022 alongside the Bruce Freeman Rail Trail, Chelmsford’s Fitness Court® was the first of many across the region to signal a shift toward more inclusive health infrastructure.

“Exercise improves mood, self-confidence, and social connection… ultimately, it strengthens your sense of community,” — Daniel Rezendes, Assistant Athletic Director for Recreation & Wellness, BSU
In communities like Malden, Everett, Georgetown, and Townsend, new Fitness Courts® are being installed in public parks and near transit hubs—ensuring everyone, regardless of age, background, or income, has access to free fitness.
“Most people can’t access healthy programs because of cost, time, or location. This Fitness Court addresses all three,” — Mayor Gary Christenson, Malden
