On October 16, Kankakee School District 111 celebrated the launch of a new Fitness Court® behind Kankakee High School, marking an exciting step forward in the district’s mission to create opportunities for health, learning, and connection. The event was hosted in partnership with Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois and NFC, bringing together students, staff, civic leaders, and community members for an afternoon of movement and celebration.
Emceed by Ronnie Wilcox, Athletic Director for the District, the ceremony began with remarks from school and sponsor representatives, including Dr. Lance of the district and Mr. DeMarco of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois. Together, they highlighted how the project represents not only a new outdoor fitness space but also a deeper investment in the health and success of Kankakee’s students and residents.
“We are excited about this partnership and the opportunity to open a Fitness Court near the new Community Center, providing our community with an additional resource for wellness and activity,” said Ronnie Wilcox, Athletic Director of Kankakee School District 111.
The launch reflected the district’s broader vision of preparing students to become globally productive citizens through equity, academic excellence, and opportunity for all. Kankakee School District 111, which serves more than 4,300 students across 11 sites—from pre-kindergarten through high school, including a Transition Program for students with disabilities ages 18–22—has long been a leader in providing comprehensive educational experiences that support students academically, socially, and emotionally. Guided by the belief that hope starts here, the district fosters inclusive environments where every student feels seen, heard, and supported.

After the ribbon cutting, the event came alive with a Fitness Court demonstration led by district ambassadors, including JROTC cadets, Special Olympics athletes, and teams of staff leaders — Brown, Iverson, Andrews, and Nelson — who showcased the seven functional training zones of the Fitness Court, demonstrating both beginner and advanced workouts. The crowd then gathered for a spirited Fitness Court Challenge, where coaches, student-athletes, and staff formed two teams of seven to compete head-to-head, demonstrating teamwork, energy, and school pride. Music played as the crowd cheered, creating an atmosphere that captured the true spirit of Kankakee’s community.
“Regular exercise is essential to maintaining personal health and reducing health care costs,” said Katie Cangemi, senior program officer of community investment, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois. “Blue Cross is committed to promoting better health in our communities, and this Fitness Court makes it easy for anyone at any fitness level to get a good outdoor workout, connect with neighbors, and stay healthy.”

Beyond the launch day excitement, the Fitness Court will become a lasting part of Kankakee High School’s health and wellness programming, supporting physical education, JROTC training, and community use throughout the year. With its free, world-class equipment and digital guidance through the Fitness Court® App, the space offers an adaptable outdoor workout for all ages and abilities.
Through this partnership, Kankakee School District 111 continues to exemplify how education and wellness can intersect to empower future leaders and strengthen communities. By embracing innovation, inclusivity, and collaboration, the district is helping shape a healthier and more connected Kankakee for generations to come.
