Edison Township Public Schools Celebrates Dual Fitness Court Launch with Students, Leaders and Community Energy

Edison Township Public Schools made history this fall as the first school district to join the Horizon campaign in New Jersey, unveiling two new Fitness Court Studios at Edison High School and J.P. Stevens High School. Together with Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey and NFC, the district marked this milestone with two high-energy launch ceremonies that brought out school leaders, students, families, and community supporters to celebrate a shared commitment to wellness.

Edison High School Kicks Off the First Launch

The celebration began on October 28 at Edison High School, where Principal Charlie Ross and Supervisor of Physical Education and Health Jeff DiCocco welcomed guests and set the tone for the afternoon. The Board of Education and Superintendent Dr. Edward Aldarelli joined as honored speakers, offering remarks before presenting Horizon with a proclamation recognizing their partnership and support.

Horizon followed with remarks from Rich Burton, Sales Manager with Public Sector for Horizon, before school leaders gathered community representatives for the ceremonial ribbon cutting. As soon as the ribbon dropped, the launch party kicked off with cheers from the varsity squad, led by the school’s cheer coach, who took to the Fitness Court Studio to energize the crowd.

PE instructors and students then led a demonstration of the seven exercise zones, showing both beginner and advanced movements alongside upbeat music. The event closed with the much-anticipated head-to-head Fitness Court challenge—an early preview of how students will continue engaging with this new wellness hub.

Superintendent Dr. Edward Aldarelli shared the significance of the moment, stating, “This Fitness Court® represents our ongoing commitment to wellness and to creating opportunities that strengthen our community. It is an investment in the health of our students, families, and neighbors that will benefit Edison for years to come.”

Principal Charles Ross added, “What’s great about Edison High is that we are always adding opportunities for our students and families. This initiative is one more way to bring people together, support wellness, and strengthen school pride.”

J.P. Stevens High School Brings the Energy

On November 14, the excitement continued at J.P. Stevens High School as students, teachers, and families filled the campus for the second ribbon-cutting event. Superintendent Dr. Aldarelli, Principal Dr. Fay Kim, and Supervisor of Health and Physical Education Jeff DiCocco opened the ceremony with school remarks.

Anna Acocella, Account Manager with Public Sector Accounts at Horizon, delivered partner remarks before leaders gathered students and guests for the ribbon cutting and group photo. The school’s cheerleaders took to the Fitness Court Studio immediately afterward, bringing spirit and movement into the launch celebration.

PE teachers and students again led demonstrations across all seven Fitness Court zones, sharing beginner and advanced variations and building enthusiasm for the new space. The ceremony wrapped with a high-energy student athlete relay, drawing cheers from classmates and spectators as participants raced across the circuit in the first of many challenges to come.

Supervisor of Health and Physical Education Jeffrey DiCocco emphasized the long-term value of this district-wide investment, noting, “As Supervisor of Health and Physical Education, I see the difference that access to fitness can make. The Fitness Court® will strengthen our programs and inspire people of all ages to build healthy habits.”

Building Momentum Beyond Launch Day

In the weeks leading up to both launches, Dr. Kim and Jeff DiCocco helped build excitement through social media previews that introduced the broader community to these new wellness spaces. Their leadership—paired with the energy of the marching band, cheer squads, students and staff—made both events unforgettable milestone moments for Edison Township Public Schools.
