This year, the state’s first Fitness Court® Challenge took place across three locations – Mount Vernon, Rochester, and SUNY Schenectady. Participants eagerly embraced the opportunity to engage in friendly competition and showcase their skills across MVP’s network to support a great cause in NAMI-NYS. The MVP Fitness Court Challenge across these 3 locations highlights the impact of the Fitness Court when integrated with consistent programming and community support.
Micheal Hernandez, another community champion across the MVP Fitness Court network, bikes to the Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences nearly everyday– and shares, “Getting out every morning to ride a bike and hit the Fitness Court keeps my weight in a healthy range and provides me with cardio and strength training.”
Mount Vernon saw participants of all ages along with Mount Vernon Police and Fire engaging in friendly competition and highlighting the importance of physical activity for mental well-being. Mayor Shawyn Patterson-Howard of Mount Vernon joined her community and posted the successful challenge across her social platforms after the event.
“The first MVP Fitness Court Challenge yesterday was a hit! We had an amazing turnout, with participants from the community, Mount Vernon Police Department, and Mount Vernon Fire Department showing off their skills across the different stations. Together, we promoted a healthy body and mind while building stronger connections in our community.”
Lead ambassador and local celebrity “Mally Mal”, played a key role in the event, leading participants through various exercises and encouraging them to push their limits. His passion for fitness and commitment to the community have made him a Mount Vernon icon.
“Seeing everyone come out and give their best is what it’s all about,” he said. “This Fitness Court isn’t just a place to work out—it’s a space where we can come together, support each other, and get stronger together.”
The impact of the Fitness Court® at Hartley Park extends far beyond the annual challenge. Since its launch, the Fitness Court® has hosted regular group workouts, fitness classes, and community events, providing a welcoming space for residents to stay active and engaged. The continuous activation and programming demonstrates the power of public-private partnerships to create lasting positive change.
