Batavia Park District Champions Community Health with New Fitness Court Studio Launch

Batavia Park District joins other partners across the state as they launch a Fitness Court at Clark Island Recreation Area.

June 26, 2025

On April 12, the Batavia Park District (IL) celebrated a major milestone in its mission to build a healthier, more connected community: the grand opening of its new Fitness Court Studio at Clark Island Recreation Area. This state-of-the-art outdoor wellness space—complete with vibrant artwork, 7 body-weight exercise stations, and inclusive programming—is a powerful symbol of the Park District’s commitment to health equity for all residents.

In partnership with National Fitness Campaign, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois, and with support from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, the City of Batavia, and the Batavia Parks Foundation, the Park District led this ambitious project from concept to completion. The result: a free, outdoor fitness space designed to serve all generations and fitness levels.

More than 800 residents turned out to celebrate the launch—an unforgettable day that combined the Park District’s beloved annual Easter Egg Hunt with the unveiling of the Fitness Court Studio and a new skate park, creating a festive, multi-generational event. Little ones hunted eggs, teens took to the skate park, and adults explored the seven-station Fitness Court Studio for a fun and functional full-body workout.

What sets Batavia’s Fitness Court apart is its Studio designation. In addition to the signature seven movement zones—core, squat, push, lunge, pull, agility, and bend—the Studio area includes a dynamic rear wall mural, featuring artwork inspired by native plants and butterflies, creating a uniquely inspiring workout environment. The Fitness Court Studio design also supports group training and programming, which the Park District wasted no time activating.

Since launch day, Batavia Park District fitness leader Kathy Freedland has hosted ongoing Power Hour classes and other members from the park district have held Jukebox sessions—high-energy group workouts synced to music on the Studio side of the Fitness Court. These classes reflect the District’s focus on accessibility, engagement, and sustainable community wellness.

The ribbon-cutting ceremony was led by Executive Director Allison Niemela, joined by Park Board Vice President John Tilmon and Secretary Julie Larson, and attended by a wide array of partners, including Mayor Jeff Schielke, Illinois Representatives Matt Hanson and Maura Hirschauer, and representatives from Senator Karina Villa’s office, BlueCross and BlueShield of Illinois, and Upland Design.

More than 22 volunteer organizations participated in the celebration, representing schools, public services, local nonprofits, and community groups. The Park District also recognized key event partners including Goldfish Swim School, Batavia Lions Club, Waubonsee Community College, Culver’s of Batavia, and Raising Cane’s of Batavia for their enthusiastic support.

From vision to execution, this project reflects the Batavia Park District’s leadership in advancing health equity and fostering community engagement. Their mission to create fun, safe, and innovative spaces has never been more visible—or more impactful—than it is at the Clark Island Recreation Area.

National Fitness Campaign is proud to stand beside Batavia as they continue to champion public health and provide free access to fitness for all.
